Columbia PA History

Columbia, a town along the Susquehanna River, was incorporated in 1814. It was home to the world’s largest covered bridge. The bridge, spanning more than 5,690 feet, crossed the Susquehanna River and connected commuters to the town of Wrightsville. The bridge had 54 stone piers, which can be seen today paralleling the newer Veterans Memorial Bridge along Route 462. The stone piers are the site of Columbia’s homegrown commemoration of “Flames Across the Susquehanna” sponsored by Rivertownes PA USA. This is a reenactment of bridge burning which occurred during the American Civil War.

Columbia boomed during the early industrial age of the 1800s with a canal system linking the Pennsylvania Canal which started in Columbia and traveled 40 miles to the Juniata River. The system moved goods from Columbia westward to markets in Pittsburgh and Lake Erie, or southward into West Virginia, eastward to Philadelphia and north into New York. The Pennsylvania Railroad traversed Columbia, transporting the area’s goods, making it a central commercial center.

By the mid-1800s Columbia was a busy hub, catering to travelers and merchants with a ferry, bridge, canal system, the railroad, a trolley and town wharves. Goods such as grain, lumber, coal, and pig iron passed through Columbia.
